Max Verstappen: “I didn’t want to overtake Perez there at all”

The Grand Prix weekend in Turkey went almost flawlessly for Max Verstappen and for his Red Bull Racing team until qualifying. In Q1 and Q2, the Dutchman was by far the fastest driver on the track, just like the three free practice sessions. Verstappen even dominated in the first two qualifying sessions, but missed pole position as Lance Stroll proved faster in his Racing Point.

During the start of the race, the 23-year-old Verstappen had a bad start to the Grand Prix. He got away with difficulty and that meant that, as always, his overtaking skills were put to the test, although that turned out not to be so easy on the tricky Istanbul Park circuit.

Ride a train

In the overtaking action on Sergio Perez it went wrong, with Verstappen at high speed able to keep his RB16 out of the wall after a big spin. The Red Bull driver received a lot of criticism after the race, but responded to De Telegraaf to the reaction of his boss Helmut Marko, who found him too impatient.

Verstappen himself says that he did not want to overtake Perez at that point: “I was not too eager to overtake, but I could do nothing else. I did not want to overtake him there, because I wanted to drive behind him but suddenly understeer. I left the track and then it was over. “

“After that it was just a train ride”, Max refers to the difficult overtaking on the circuit in Turkey.
