“Gracias Negrito”: Edinson Cavani risks three matches of suspension for racist comments on Instagram

Cavani, 33, released the post following Manchester United’s 2-3 success at Southampton where he scored the winning goal, his second of the game, in stoppage time on Sunday. To thank a subscriber, the Mancunian striker wrote “Gracias negrito!” before deleting the post.

Last season, Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) published a photo of his teammate Benjamin Mendy as a child next to an image of a black man, the symbol of a brand of chocolate candy. He had received a suspension match.

Manchester United defended their Uruguayan striker, explaining that the word had a different connotation in South America and that it was used in a friendly manner. The Mancunian club also clarified that it had informed Cavani that the use of such a term in the United Kingdom was against the rules set by the FA
