Edinson Cavani’s joy after being the hero of Manchester United’s victory over Southampton could be a nightmare. He is threatened with a three-match suspension. Why?
Cavani scored two goals and one assist when Manchester United recorded a sensational comeback at Southampton headquarters on Sunday (29/11/2020) evening WIB. Behind 0-2 earlier, MU won 3-2 in the Premier League match.
Thanks to his appearance, Cavani also received congratulations on social media. Unfortunately for Cavani, one of his replies to what was received was considered racial harassment.
He wrote the term ‘Negrito’ which means black or in this context, black skin. Manchester United also reportedly immediately explained to Cavani that his upload could potentially be misinterpreted in England, because the term was considered insulting.
Cavani then deleted his upload and explained that he used the term as an expression of affection. The 33-year-old also emphasized that the word has a different connotation in Uruguay and is not an insulting expression.
However, the English Football Association (FA) will still investigate this case. As for Edinson Cavani, he will face a 3-match suspension if he is proven to have violated rules regarding racism, language and discriminatory attitudes.
The term ‘Negrito’ has also appeared in the case of the racism of Luis Suarez, who was Cavani’s colleague in the Uruguay national team, and Patrice Evra in the 2011/2012 season. Suarez, who was defending Liverpool at the time, was found guilty of his words against the Manchester United defender and sentenced to an 8-match suspension.
In the case of Suarez-Evra, former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur player from Uruguay, Gus Poyet, also explained that the word is not an insulting term in their country. Last season, Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Tottenham Hotspur Dele Alli was suspended for one game for violating rules about racism in the media.
