A bad accident in Formula 1 came to a happy end. Driver Romain Grosjean, whose car broke in two and went up in flames, was miraculously injured.

A fire accident overshadowed the Formula 1 race in Bahrain. Shortly after the start of the third-to-last Grand Prix of the season on Sunday, Haas driver Romain Grosjean crashed into the guard rails. His car was torn in two in the high-speed impact and went up in flames. The reason was initially unknown. Grosjean had previously touched Alpha Tauri driver Daniil Kwjat and then came off the tarmac.

TV pictures showed how Grosjean was able to free himself from the cockpit and flee from the flames in shock. The 34-year-old then sat in the track doctor’s car shortly after the crash. He had to be supported when he was escorted to an ambulance. The race was initially interrupted.

“Minor burns on hands and ankles”

As the US team announced to Haas, Grosjean suffered “several minor burns on his hands and ankles”. Otherwise he is okay. He was examined by the racing doctors, the cars had long since returned to the pits. He was later taken to the hospital for further examination.

When his driver colleagues saw on screens how Grosjean was under medical care, they spontaneously applauded in the pit lane. Haas team boss Günther Steiner initially had no direct contact with his driver. “I was told he was scared,” commented the South Tyrolean on Sky TV. “That was luck in bad luck, you have to say.”

The race continued after an 80-minute break. It won world champion Lewis Hamilton.
