Olbia Hosts Italian A2 Beginners B Judo Championship After 22 Years

Olbia is preparing for the Italian A2 Beginners B Judo Championship

After 22 years, Judo finally returns to Sardinia, in Olbia, with the Italian A2 Beginners B Judo Championship, thanks to the Sports Center of Olbia, which once again obtained this prestigious recognition for its organizational skills and value sportsman from FIJLKAM, the Italian Judo Wrestling Karate Martial Arts Federation. This merit is the result of the numerous, important results achieved at a national and international level in recent years.

The event will be held in Olbia on 25 and 26 May 2024 at the GeoPalace and is dedicated exclusively to the Beginners B category. This prestigious event is organized with the support of the Regional Department of Tourism, Commerce and Crafts, of the Regional Department of Sport , Culture and Public Education and the Municipality of Olbia.

At a national level, the event is of great importance for young athletes, as it helps to determine the national ranking of the most talented rookies in Italy and offers the opportunity to qualify for the national A1 category championships.

The enthusiasm is sky high, with around 500 athletes who will compete on the tatami to win the titles in the different categories at the GeoPalace. Furthermore, 255 companies from different Italian regions will be present, demonstrating their exceptional involvement in the competition.

“In a record year for Italian judo, which saw several judokas triumph at European and world level, with the latest great performance by Odette Giuffrida, who recently won gold at the Judo World Championships in Abu Dhabi, and especially for the Olbia Sports Center which achieved historic results for both Sardinian and national Judo with its athletes Raimondo Degortes (66 kg M2) and Federico Deiana (60 Kg M1) winners in their respective categories of the veterans world title, in the months seen in Abu Dhabi. Very important were Francesco Lai’s silver medal at the A1 Italian cadet championship (46 Kg) and Federico Lai’s silver medal at the City of Colombo International Trophy (Cadet Grand Prix) (46 Kg)

“I am particularly happy with this extraordinary participation,” declares Maestro Efisio Mele, 5th Dan, founder and guide of the Olbia Sports Center. “This is an absolute record for our land, especially considering the historical moment we are experiencing, given that during the pandemic period the number of athletes in Italy practically halved.”

The competitions will begin on Saturday 25th at 9.30 am with the men’s races, followed by the women’s races on Sunday 26th at 9.00 am. The Italian Judo Beginners Championship is open to the public, with free entry, and invites all enthusiasts to experience this extraordinary demonstration of talent and dedication in the world of judo up close.
