DFB Cup: Schalke receives Schweinfurt instead of Türkgücü Munich

Regional league team Türkgücü Munich will not take part in the DFB Cup this season, instead 1. FC Schweinfurt will – as originally planned – be registered for the cup and meet FC Schalke in the first round.

The third division wanted to play in the DFB Cup instead of the Schweinfurt regional league club and took action against the nomination by the Bavarian Football Association (BFV) – and was initially right. An arbitration tribunal has now ruled that a BFV’s corona regulation was legal. The match between Schweinfurt and Schalke will take place next Tuesday, November 3rd (kick-off: 4.30 p.m.; Pay TV: Sky).

Türkgücü can no longer lodge an objection, and going to ordinary courts is not possible. “We would have loved to save ourselves this legal dispute. Because in the end there are no winners here, the loser was football,” says BFV Vice President Reinhold Baier, who is responsible for legal issues.

The BFV traditionally sends the Bavarian amateur champion, i.e. the regional league winner, into the first round of the cup. Because the league had been interrupted due to Corona, the officials worked out a compromise in the spring: Türkgücü, the table leader at the time of the lockdown, should be promoted to the 3rd division. The second-placed Schweinfurters got the right to start in the cup.
