Tiger Woods knew he was heading for the east coast, so why not kill two birds with one stone? Ahead of this week’s Northern Trust, the PGA Tour’s first FedEx Cup playoff event starting Thursday at TPC Boston, Woods took a small detour to get a sneak peek at Winged Foot, the site of the US Open. next month.
The Woods course confirmed to Golf Digest that they stopped in Mamaroneck, NY for an 18-hole practice round with Justin Thomas before both players headed to the Boston area on Monday night. A video was posted on Instagram showing the two players hitting the balls from the mats on the Winged Foot driving range.
Woods frequently visited major league venues early in the game to play practice rounds played prior to tournament week, including a round at Bethpage Black eight days before last year’s PGA Championship.
The US Open at Winged Foot, which will be played without fans, will begin on September 17th. Woods played two previous majors at Winged Foot, finishing T-29 at the 1997 PGA Championship and missing his first major cut as a pro at the 2006 US Open, played shortly after his father died.
