Some NBA owners were reportedly opposed to the league fielding “Black Lives Matter” for the Orlando reboot.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said on his podcast that Adam Silver played an important role in gaining ownership of the message:
“Not all NBA owners were thrilled to have ‘Black Lives Matter’ on the pitch. I know they weren’t all. Some are extremely supportive. Others less so. None of them publicly. [critical].
“But I know Adam Silver told them, ‘Hey guys, this is what we’re going to do to support our players. Our league is overwhelmingly made up of African American players. This is important. This is a partnership. We have to work together for get through this season and into next year. I’ll be curious to know how the relationship and partnership will go on. “
The league pledged $ 300 million over 10 years for social justice causes and allowed players to wear approved phrases on the back of their jerseys, as well as on-pitch messaging, as part of the reboot. The players pushed for social justice messages to play a major role in returning to play following the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd at the hands of the police earlier this year.
