Andre Dillard injury: the Eagles left for the 2020 season with a torn biceps

Philadelphia Eagles starting left tackle Andre Dillard is set to miss the entire 2020 NFL season after sustaining a bicep injury during training camp on Thursday, according to Mike Garafolo, an NFL insider.

We described how Dillard’s injury happened in today’s practice notes:

Dillard held his hand / arm in pain after taking on Josh Sweat 1v1. Dillard was crouched and kneeling a bit to the side as the coaches examined him. Dillard left the field and did not return to training. Regarding the fact that he was hit during the whole camp. He had previously left training early Sunday. During a recent BGN Radio podcast, my co-host Jimmy Kempski also said that Dillard was spotted on crutches at some point before camp started. So … maybe he has more than one injury? [UPDATE: Derrick Gunn notes that Dillard suffered a biceps injury in addition to a shoulder strain he was dealing with.]

Dillard did not have the best camp before injuring himself. He still has a lot to prove to be a long-term response to the left tackle. And he will unfortunately not have the chance to do the same this season.

With Dillard injured, the Eagles will likely bring Jason Peters back to his natural left tackle position. Peters lined up for right guard at training camp with injured Brandon Brooks at the end of the season in June. Matt Pryor appears to be the man replacing Brooks now, with Peters returning outside to replace Dillard’s vacant position.

Given concerns about Dillard’s performance, Peters on the left tackle and Pryor on the right guard may actually be the Eagles’ best offensive line combination in the short term. But Peters is also likely to get rocked at some point and it’s unclear who would replace him if that happens. The Eagles have given Jordan Mailata first-team reps in training, but the Aussie is far from a safe option.

There are real concerns about the state of the Eagles’ offensive line heading into this season.
