NCHSAA is postponing football to February and shortening the season for all sports due to a pandemic

– The NC High School Athletic Association will not play high school football this fall and all other sports will see changes to their schedules following a vote by the NCHSAA Board of Directors on Tuesday evening, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said in a video statement on Wednesday afternoon .

The high school football season begins in early February and lasts through early April. No sports are allowed to have official test matches or exercises until November 4th.

The first sports to be played are cross-country skiing and volleyball, starting in November and ending in early January. Swimming will start in late November and last through late January.

The basketball season has been postponed to December. It will run from December to mid-February. Boys’ soccer and boys and girls lacrosse are scheduled to start in January and end in mid-March.

Golf, tennis for boys, soccer for girls, and softball are all played in March and April. Then the sports year ends from mid-April to mid-June with baseball, girls’s tennis, athletics and wrestling.

All playing times are shortened, with soccer playing seven games and most other sports 14 games. Cross-country skiing, swimming & diving and athletics will have 10 competitions.

No decisions have been made about the state playoffs, but the NCHSAA says they want to host playoffs.

  • 23 Nov-Jan 30: Swimming & Diving (First competition, December 7th)
  • Dec. Dec. 7th February 19: Basketball (first competition, January 4th)
  • January 11th – March 12th: Boys’ football, lacrosse (first competition, January 25th)
  • Feb. 8-Apr. 9: Football (first competition, February 26)
  • Apple. January-April. 30: Golf, boys tennis, girls soccer, softball (first competition, March 15)
  • April 12th – June 11th: Baseball, girls’ tennis, athletics, wrestling (first competition, April 26)
  • 1st of May: Cheerleading inviting

The NCHSAA will hold a press conference at 3:30 pm to answer questions from media representatives.

The fall sports season was scheduled to start on August 1st, but the NCHSAA postponed that date to September 1st. Earlier this month, the NCHSAA postponed the start of fall sports again after Governor Roy Cooper extended Phase 2 of the state’s reopening schedule until at least September 11th.
