Courageous intervention in Sweden: professional soccer player catches handbag robbers

Dhe Swedish national soccer player Victor Lindelof of the Premier League team Manchester United caught a robber while visiting his home country. The incident took place on Monday in Lindelof’s birthplace Västerås near Stockholm.

A statement from the police said that a 30-year-old man on a bicycle had stolen the bag from a 90-year-old woman while driving past, which was in the basket of her walker. A man ran after the thief, caught him and held him until the police arrived and arrested the alleged perpetrator.

The man who intervened so courageously was, according to the newspaper “Sportbladet”, the 26-year-old Man United defender Lindelof. The paper quoted an unspecified source close to Manchester United: “Victor feels that he has done exactly what anyone would have done in this situation.”

The Västerås authorities did not mention Lindelof’s name, but thanked the professional footballer for his courageous commitment. “The police would like to take the opportunity to thank the witness for his swift and wise intervention to recover the plaintiff’s property,” said a statement on the website. The stolen senior citizen is said to have invited Lindelof to dinner as a thank you. It was initially not known whether the footballer accepted the invitation.
