The Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) is interested in establishing a base in Latgale by visiting the future multifunctional arena of the Olympic Center “Rēzekne” (OCR), said the president of the organization Raimonds Vējonis.
According to the representative of the City Council Kārlis Pozņakovs, during the meeting Vējonis repeatedly emphasized the potential of Rēzekne to develop into a basketball development center of Latgale region.
“LBS is looking forward to Latgale with great hopes and we are interested in creating a base that could gather the brightest talents of the region – both players and coaches. Rezekne is already in the final stages of arena construction, as well as the city’s infrastructure is adequate. we are ready to cooperate, providing high – level events and competitions in Rezekne with the aim to promote basketball, “commented the head of LBS.
Vējonis and LBS Secretary General Kaspars Cipruss also thanked for the support of the municipality so that the stage of the Latvian professional 3×3 basketball league could be organized in Rēzekne in August.
In turn, the chairman of Rēzekne City Council Aleksandrs Bartaševičs (S) emphasized that in recent years, thanks to the work of local professionals, interest in basketball has grown significantly and the sport is developing rapidly, so the support of LBS is especially important.
“We have already agreed with the surrounding municipalities, educational institutions and sports associations to work together to make OCR an effective regional sports base. LBS support will be a very important aspect for us in attracting partners and talent,” commented the mayor.
Bartaševičs, the head of the Sports Department Aleksejs Grehovs, the chairman of the board of the sports club “Ezerzeme” Arturs Šķesters, as well as the members of the OCR board Jekaterina Meirāne and Vladimirs Bogdanovs met with the LBS delegation.
