The PGA Tour reportedly plans to play the rest of this season’s tournaments, including FedEx Cup events, with no fans present

While the PGA Tour initially planned to have fans in many of its remaining tournaments this season, this no longer seems to be the case. Last week saw the reverse tour route during this week’s Ohio Memorial Tournament, which was initially set to be the first tournament after fans closed in March. But they announced on Monday that “out of an abundance of caution”, they would hold that tournament without fans. And on Saturday, Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard reported that the Tour plans to extend this approach to its remaining nine events this season, which include three FedEx Cup playoff events and the PGA Championship next month.

Obviously, the PGA championship was ready to be played without fans and they announced last month that their media operations would also be “mainly remote”. But this confirms that that decision is not changing.

The PGA Tour plans to announce that the remaining events of this season will be played without fans or pro-am, several sources have reported to Golf Channel.

… The move to play fanless for the rest of the season is a response to the rise in coronavirus epidemics across the country.

In last week’s announcement that they had no fans at the Memorial, Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan referred to “the broader challenges communities are facing” and said that attention was now being paid to “health and safety of everyone involved “. The commissioner added that the tour would welcome fans, “when the time is right”.

Rickie Fowler was asked about this report by the media after his Saturday shift at the Workday Charity Open. Todd Kelly of Golfweek has his comments here:

“It’s the first time I’ve heard of it,” he said. “I think with everything that’s going on and concerns about health and safety and everything the Tour has done up to this point, I have to stay with them until I say it’s the right decision, and I think we’re seeing that there there were other peaks and nothing necessarily calmed down.

“In a way, at some point it might be inevitable to know where things were going, but I think the Tour has done a great job so far, and everything they have put in place, all the protocols, and sometimes it’s day for day by week, trying to learn and progress as we continue. Yes, as I said, I have heard of it before, but I think they have done a great job and I support them with their decision. “

Hoggard’s piece points out that nothing has yet been decided for the next season, which will begin on September 10 with the Safeway Open in Napa.
