Türkgücü Munich is the first migrant club in German professional football. This creates prejudices, resistance – and forces that pull on the actual idea. In Munich the club feels forgotten.

AWhen Hakan Sengöz used to walk through Munich, it sometimes felt like the Turkish national team was there. He saw the many fans with red and white flags, some came from Munich, some from further afield. They pushed their way through the streets of Gern, a quarter in the north of the city, into the Dante Stadium, where they ate Sucuk, drank Ayran, watched football. “It was like a folk festival,” says Sengöz. There were 12,000 people on good match days.

Hakan Sengöz, born and raised in Munich, was one of many who fell in love with SV Türk Gücü in the 1980s. His big brother played in the youth group, with him he watched the first team. This rose to the Bayernliga, then the third highest in Germany, played against the TSV 1860, awesome.
