New York Jets head coach Adam Game is reported to have pushed the organization to trade safety Marcus Maye in 2019. An agreement was never reached, but after the addition of Ashtyn Davis, the Jets could again take phone calls with the old one from Florida.
Entering the final year of his entry contract, Maye would only cost the Steelers $ 1,358,730, which is very manageable. It would also immediately strengthen the Steelers’ safety depth chart and allow the team to play with 3 safeties on the field at the same time.
Currently, the Steelers’ safety depth chart is quite rare. After Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds, it looks like this: Jordan Dangerfield and Marcus Allen of the special team and 6th round choice for Antoine Antoine Brooks Jr. Not exactly sterling, especially in case of injury.
Marcus Maye even published very good figures a year ago, including:
65 tackles
1 interception (against the Steelers)
14 defensive passes
Adding so much production to an already stacked unit seems unfair, but this trade is well within reach. Another reason why this trade could actually happen is that the Steelers built a reputation with Maye on his pro day in 2017, after which he would have one of the best games of his career against Pittsburgh in 2019 and actually took end of their season.
While Jamal Adams is the big fish in the commercial pool right now, Marcus Maye is an affordable and credible option for the club if he decides to take security seriously. If so, this is the option the team should explore.
