NBA: Magicians sign Jarrod Uthoff, according to the report

The Washington Wizards signed Jarrod Uthoff, Memphis Hustle’s G-League team striker on Friday according to Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic.

Uthoff has played 13 NBA games including four with the Memphis Grizzlies this season. He spent much of his professional playing career in the G-League for Hustle, Texas Legends, Fort Wayne Mad Ants and Raptors 905. He also played with the Russian team Zenit Saint Petersburg in the 2018-19 basketball season.

With Hustle, Uthoff averaging 19 points and 10.7 rebounds per game in 34 games played. He played three seasons at the University of Iowa before turning professional.

MORE INFORMATION FROM KEVIN BROOM

Uthoff was one of the top G League producers this season – 26.0 points, 14.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per 100 team possessions. Its offensive efficiency was 125 points produced for 100 possessions with a utilization rate slightly above the average of 21.1%.

At 6-9, Uthoff is a stretched four who fired 36.7% from three points with good volume – 7.6 attempts per 100 team possessions. He also connected 56.2% from two points and 79.0% on free throws. In other words, it can shoot.

Uthoff is also considered an above average G League defender – good theft and blocking for an attacking player.

His score in my metric, PPA (in PPA, 100 is average and higher is better), Uthoff had 157. His performance in the G League this season suggests someone who could be average or better at the NBA level.

This is not likely to be a long-term addition to Wizards, given that Uthoff is already 27 years old. However, it’s a good pickup for The Bubble that adds some depth of frontcourt.
