Jay Cutler knows headlines well. From his 12-year NFL career to his failed marriage to Kristen Cavallari, the retired quarterback has been in the spotlight since he was still in college. Recently, however, Cutler made the headlines for something truly unique – not just for him but for the NFL in general – as he tried to find the culprit who was killing his chickens.
Cutler’s career in football
Cutler had a successful career at Vanderbilt in college. His arm and his penchant for victory made him a shoo-in for the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He only had to wait to see 10 names called before him before being selected by the Denver Broncos with the eleventh choice in the first round. For the next three years, he had the keys to the franchise.
In Denver, Cutler had an adequate, if not unusual, career start. He could throw the ball where it went, but his penchant for interception immediately worried the Broncos. In his third year with the team, Cutler threw 25 touchdowns and 4,526 yards for 18 interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference. That summer Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears after just three years with the Broncos.
According to who was interviewed, Cutler was either an excellent quarterback stuck with a lousy frankness, or a mediocre quarterback whose flaws were reflected in the lack of success of his team on the ground. While Cutler led the Bears to 10 wins in two of his first four seasons with the team, he struggled to achieve a winning record for most of his tenure. Whether it was his fault or not, Cutler never had a chance to succeed.
In 2017, after a brief retirement from the NFL, Cutler adapted for a single season with the Miami Dolphins before calling him definitively.
The great chicken mystery

At the end of June, Cutler went to Instagram to accuse his cat of having no morals. The cat in question was charged with killing Cutler’s chickens on his farm. Those who have followed Cutler know that he has always been a special personality, so his penchant for life on the farm should not be a surprise. The saga of his dying chickens, however, seemed straight out of a real crime podcast.
While Cutler has not absolved his cat of any crime, he expanded his investigation when he noticed what appeared to be an owl in the nearby desert. Cutler publicly apologized to his cat on Instagram, but said he would find any killer. Ultimately, Cutler accused several species of killing his chickens, from Sasquatch to cheetahs.
However, after days of investigation, Cutler arrived at the culprit.
Who Killed Cutler’s Chickens?
Cutler tried a little of everything. According to CBS Sports, he tried everything, from cameras to traps, to the purchase of a weapon specifically for rodents, the killer was still at large. Then, on July 1, the retired quarterback made a big announcement on his Instagram.
“Everything is fine and happy to announce that it was a raccoon. Which matches the evidence, ”wrote Cutler. “Chicken heads were torn off and bodies were left in the chicken coop. Horrible stuff but the reality of the situation. The women are now safe. We can all sleep well for a few nights. Unfortunately, I’m sure this raccoon has family members. “
Cutler’s saga was just as horrible and hilarious. Incidents like this are common for anyone with a chicken stroke, but it’s not everyday that the person is an NFL quarterback. Cutler seemed to use time to entertain and make the most of his fans. Fortunately, he caught the culprits, and the chickens are now thriving safely until the next one comes and tries to take them away.
