(Reuters) – AS Roma has reached a “preliminary agreement” to extend the loan agreement of midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Arsenal until the end of next season, the Serie A club said on Tuesday.

Mkhitaryan, 31, joined the Italians early in the season after a disappointing 18-month spell at the Premier League Arsenal following an exchange agreement in January 2018 that saw Chile striker Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United.

“I am very happy,” Mkhitaryan told the Rome website. “I am happy to extend my stay here because I still have things that I have not yet achieved and that I want to achieve. I can not wait. ”

Armenia scored six goals and provided four assists in all competitions for the club in Rome. His loan deal would expire on Tuesday.

“We are happy that Henrikh has decided to stay with us and help us continue to grow,” said Rome CEO Guido Fienga.

“The club’s goals have not changed and we always want to have players in our club, like Micki, who show their desire, professionalism and determination, who represent our club and our fans in the right way.”

Roma are fifth in the standings with 48 points and on track to qualify for the Europa League. They are nine points behind Atalanta who occupies the fourth and last place in the Champions League with 10 games to play.
