Tennis – ready for tricky moments – sport in the region

Maximilian Marterer and Cedrik-Marcel Stebe win their intermediate round tournaments in the German Men’s Series.

There were Maximilian Marterer and Jeremy Schifris now, on the club premises of the TC Großhesselohe, both holding a six-pack of beer in their hands. Although these were also drinks that are said to have an isotonic effect after playing tennis, the bottles were intended as gifts from a beverage sponsor for the two finalists in the Tannenhof German Men’s Series.

As outstanding as tennis in Großhesselohe and Oberhaching may have been in the past few days, it was these little moments that showed that the tournament series on German soil was a bit closer to the “normal” Bundesliga and the association games than it was before the big show events like the megalomaniac Adria Tour by Novak Djokovic. In Großhesselohe, as at all locations, the main priority was to offer German professionals a perspective, an opportunity to play tournament tennis, and all this in conjunction with a price check and some beer.

The check for 5000 euros was received on Friday afternoon in the Isar Valley Maximilian Marterer. The top seed in Großhesselohe, who is based at the tennis base in Oberhaching, was able to prevail against the young Munich Schifris with a clear 6: 2, 6: 2. Schifris had only stepped in at short notice because Kevin Krawietz had to cancel due to back problems. Krawietz, French Open double winner from last year, will still be seen in just under two weeks at the semifinals in Meerbusch (North Rhine-Westphalia) – together with Marterer.

He was extremely satisfied with his tournament week: “It was an absolutely enjoyable week for me, I played good tennis,” said Marterer after the award ceremony: “It is always nice to be the winner of the week.” For the Franconian, the rhythm mentioned was crucial, which he found more and more: “In the first match and in the third match against Kevin (Krawietz) there were two situations in the tiebreak where I had to play my best tennis. And that is exactly what it is about to get these situations again and make the right decisions. ” The competitions were also good as a fitness test during the week, especially in the midday sun on Friday the players were challenged. “Physically I’m back to 100 percent, it’s good to know that you can get four matches back in four days,” said Marterer.

While the winner of the week was able to take a lot with him, on Friday the Großhesseloher Bundesliga player Peter Gojowczyk had to cancel his final in the bonus round: at number 125 in the world rankings, it was hip problems that prevented an appearance. For Gojowczyk, 23-year-old Baden-Württemberg’s Paul Wörner moved up, in a close match he had to give up Lucas Gerch 6: 3, 3: 6, 2: 6. Gerch thus won the bonus round, just like a few kilometers further south, at the intermediate round tournament in Oberhaching, Matthias Bachinger: he prevailed in the bonus round final against Max Rehberg. Cedrik-Marcel Stebe won the final of the intermediate round in Oberhaching, 3: 6, 6: 2, 6: 3 was the result against Daniel Masur.

In general, it seems as if a trio from the tennis base in the south of Munich are establishing themselves as favorites for the Tannenhof Open: Marterer, Stebe and Yannick Hanfmann, who qualified for the semi-finals in Neuss. “On the show, you can see that we’re base players on the right track. We’re all three in good shape,” said Marterer, who definitely wants to go to the semi-finals – that there will be a structuring of the international within the next two weeks Franke does not believe there will be competitions anyway.

“Because we don’t have a plan internationally, I simply can’t say it,” Marterer looked into a rather uncertain future, especially for him as a player on the Challenger Tour: “Of course I would be happy, but like many tournaments we have to be offered again to us Challenger players. Of course I hope that the ATP will support them and that a few organizers may get an extra budget. ” In the long run, none of the top players will be able to make a living from the checks that are distributed at the domestic German tournament – especially not from the winning beer.
