Robben wants to trigger a shock with the Eredivise team Groningen

The 36-year-old had ended his famous career after helping Bayern Munich to win a double in the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup in 2018/19.

However, a change of heart has prompted the former Dutch international to return sentimentally to the club where he started his career.

Robben, who had recently been trained at Bayern, said he wanted to do his part to help Groningen recover after the coronavirus pandemic.

“I was 12 when I started playing at FC Groningen’s youth academy,” he told the website.

“When I was 16, I made my home debut against Feyenoord. After two years I switched to PSV Eindhoven. After a wonderful 18-year adventure, we are returning to Groningen.

“We are coming home in this difficult time or crisis that also hit FC Groningen. It’s great to see how everyone supports the club. I also supported the club and thought about what else I could do.” for our club.

“In the past few weeks I have had many conversations with club employees and perhaps more than anything else we have heard the call of our supporters ‘Arjen, follow your heart’.

“As a comeback player at FC Groningen, I started playing with this idea and now I have made it my mission.

“I want to celebrate my comeback as a football player, as a FC Groningen player.

“At this point in time, I’m not sure if it will happen. I’m sure that my drive and motivation will be 100 percent correct.

“It will be a tough physical challenge, but I will make it. I will work hard and if everything feels right, I will join the team for the first training session of the new season.”

Robben made his professional debut at Groningen in 2000 and spent two seasons there before moving to PSV, where he won a championship title in the 2002/03 season.

He won further championships in England, Spain and Germany with Chelsea, Madrid and Bavaria and became one of the best general players in the world.

Robben also scored the winning goal in the 2013 Champions League final when Bayern defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley and did a historic triple.

He won 96 caps for the Netherlands, scored 37 goals and was part of the Dutch team beaten by Spain in South Africa in the 2010 World Cup final.
