Phil Neville reveals how many purchases Manchester United needs to catch Liverpool

England women’s boss Phil Neville believes her former Manchester United team is just one sign of bridging the gap on Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s team won their first Premier League title last week to bring their league title count to 19, putting them only a shy of United’s 20 record.

United have not managed to increase their budget since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and has had a backseat in recent years, as rivals Liverpool and Manchester City dominate.

Nonetheless, the recent unbeaten match of 14 United games and the signing of Bruno Fernandes have given fans hope to start putting together the type of team that could see them regaining their former glory.

And Neville believes that the club is only one – and a maximum of two – signatures far from the end of the title.

When asked what United needs to catch its rivals, Neville told Premier League Productions: “I think another player signs. Think of Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk or Alisson on goal. I think one or [maybe] two more purchases.

‘I think that Paul Pogba besides signing playing at their absolute best, then United can get much closer. At the center of the defender, look at the effect that Van Dijk has had.

‘Harry Maguire had a great effect, but I think another really strong central defender. I still think they must be defensively healthy. I think another signature and United can challenge. ‘

Despite Neville’s request for defensive reinforcements, it is midfield and attack that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to strengthen this summer.

Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho remains a top priority despite the Bundesliga club’s £ 120m rating on the English star.

Jack Grealish is another key target, although his future and price are likely to be determined by the final games of Aston Villa to determine if they can stay in the Premier League.
