Lima officially marked the 300-day countdown to the XX Pan American Games on Saturday, setting the stage for the continental multi-sport gathering scheduled from July 23 to August 8, 2027. Organizing officials and international sports leaders gathered in the Peruvian capital to launch the preparations, returning the event to the city that successfully hosted the 2019 edition.
A Continental Meeting Point in Lima
The 2027 Pan American Games will convert Peru into the central meeting point for sports across the Americas, according to the organizing committee. More than 7,000 athletes representing 41 countries are expected to travel to the Peruvian capital and the neighboring province of Callao to compete across 38 sports and 59 disciplines.
For many competitors, the 17 days of competition will carry profound stakes beyond medals. Several sports will serve as direct qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, intensifying the competition across venues.
Extensive Sports Program and Key Venues
The athletic schedule spans a wide range of disciplines, blending traditional Olympic programs with events deeply rooted in continental sporting culture. Competitions will feature track and field, badminton, team handball, baseball and softball, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, cricket, equestrian, sport climbing, fencing, waterskiing, football, and gymnastics.
Additional events include golf, field hockey, judo, karate, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, roller sports, Basque pelota, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, rugby, squash, surfing, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, shooting, triathlon, sailing, and volleyball.
Opening events over the 17-day calendar will focus on baseball, boxing, handball, and cycling variations, while athletics events will take center stage from August 2 through August 7.
To accommodate the massive schedule, competitions will utilize facilities distributed throughout Lima and Callao. Primary venues include the National Sports Village (Videna), the Villa María del Triunfo sports complex, the Villa El Salvador sports center, and the natural surfing break at Punta Rocas. Additional matches and events are assigned to the Estadio Nacional, the Eduardo Dibós Coliseum, the Army Equitation School, the Las Palmas Air Base, and the Callao Regional Sports Village.
International Leadership Backing
Organization officials confirmed that preparations are advancing steadily across all functional areas under the direct supervision of Panam Sports. The milestone arrives as the region builds on the momentum of Lima’s previous turn as host.
During the opening of the 64th Panam Sports General Assembly in Lima on August 27, Panam Sports President Neven Ilic recalled presiding over the closing ceremony of the 2019 Lima Games, which he previously termed the best and largest in history, expressing full confidence that the 2027 edition will match or exceed that standard.
Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori emphasized during the assembly’s opening ceremony that the upcoming games must represent more than just a sporting celebration. Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry echoed those sentiments, stating her absolute confidence in the success of Lima 2027.
