Men’s Team Final Upset Sets the Tone

The trouble began during the men’s team final when the Chinese national badminton team fell 2-3 to Indonesia. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, China surrendered matches, culminating in a loss by world No. 12 Li Shifeng against Indonesia’s Farhan Alwi.

Shi Yuqi and Li Shifeng Suffer Early Singles Eliminations

In the men’s singles competition, top Chinese contenders exited the tournament prematurely. Shi Yuqi, a former world No. 1 and a leading star for Chinese badminton, faced South Korea’s young player Yoo Tae Bin in the third round. Shi dropped the match in straight games with scores of 17-21, 23-25. Earlier in the schedule, Li Shifeng was ousted in the second round by South Korean competitor Choi Ji Hoon. With those exits, China was completely eliminated from the men’s singles quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal Lineup and Indonesian Advancements

Following the upsets, Indonesia advanced two players to the men’s singles quarterfinals: Farhan Alwi, who was slated to face Chou Tien Chen, and Jonatan Christie, who drew Loh Kean Yew. The remaining quarterfinal matches paired Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong against Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, and Yoo Tae Bin against Japan’s Kodai Naraoka.

Women’s Singles Bright Spot for China

While the men’s side faltered, Chinese players in the women’s singles draw maintained their footing. Chen Yufei and Wang Zhiyi both secured their places in the quarterfinals, setting up challenging upcoming matches that include a competitive path against South Korean superstar An Se Young.
