Runner Gerard Hermans (77) from Riel and his 49-year-old son Mathieu returned to the Tilburg Ten Miles following Gerard’s recovery from a severe blood disease, turning the mass-participation running event into a generational family celebration.
Overcoming Illness to Return to the Tilburg Streets
For Gerard Hermans, lacing up his running shoes for the Tilburg Ten Miles carried a profound personal meaning after a harrowing battle with his health. A severe blood disease struck the 77-year-old a few years ago, delivering a heavy physical blow that temporarily halted his lifelong passion. Running has anchored his routine for more than fifty years, dating back to his youth when he balanced soccer and badminton with daily post-work jogs and local races. Determined to reclaim his active life, Hermans fought his way back to health and maintained his conditioning specifically to reenter the event. “Ik moest voor mijn gevoel laten zien dat ik nog leefde,” Hermans stated, describing his drive to prove his survival on the course.
A Generational Tradition on Course
The Tilburg Ten Miles serves as an annual family milestone for the Hermans household, bringing together father, son, and memories of younger generations. Mathieu Hermans, 49, joined his father at the starting line, continuing a lifelong routine rooted in childhood spent watching training sessions through the woods. “Het blijft goud om samen met die ouwe te lopen,” Mathieu said of the shared miles. While Mathieu views the race as an ultimate annual test of his own fitness, his father joked about his training volume ahead of the start. Gerard noted that his son had messaged him recently about a lack of preparation, prompting a lighthearted prediction on race day strategy. “Maar als hij het niet volhoudt, mag hij ook gewoon een stukje wandelen. Dan kan ik hem eindelijk eens voorbij rennen,” Gerard remarked.
Event Scope and Atmosphere
The massive regional sports weekend drew thousands of runners and tens of thousands of spectators into the streets of Tilburg. Festivities opened with walking events, paving the way for the signature 10-mile course—measuring roughly 16.1 kilometers—alongside 5-kilometer, 10-kilometer, and youth divisions. For Gerard, who completed roughly ten prior editions in his earlier running years, chasing a personal record took a backseat to soaking in the community energy. “Er komt zoveel energie en enthousiasme los, daar zorgen de mensen langs de kant voor,” he explained, emphasizing his primary goals of staying in motion and preserving his long-term health.
