Spanish cyclist Héctor Álvarez won the silver medal in the Under-23 men’s road race at the World Championships in Montreal on Sept. 25, 2026. Álvarez finished 53 seconds behind gold medalist Ashlin Barry of the United States, marking the fourth medal for the Spanish delegation at the event.
Ashlin Barry secures gold via long-range solo attack
Ashlin Barry claimed the world title after a decisive solo break that saw him clear the field by more than 30 kilometers from the finish.
Barry, who turned 19 on the day of the race, became the sole leader after dropping Dane Kristian Egholm with 32 kilometers remaining. He currently competes for the Visma-Lease a Bike development team.
Tactical failure and frustration for Héctor Álvarez
Despite securing the silver, Álvarez crossed the finish line in a state of visible frustration, striking his handlebars and appearing in tears. Analysis of the race indicates that while Álvarez possessed the physical strength to challenge for the win, tactical misalignment in the chase group prevented him from closing the gap to Barry.
Álvarez launched multiple attacks starting 38 kilometers from the finish line. However, he was unable to coordinate with the race favorite, Italy’s Scalco. This lack of cooperation among the pursuers allowed Barry to maintain a lead that peaked at 40 seconds before expanding further toward the finish.
Álvarez eventually won the sprint among the chasing group to secure second place. He was joined at the same time by Norway’s Jesper Stiansen, who took the bronze medal. French rider Aubin Sparfel, another pre-race favorite, also finished behind the Spaniard.
Spanish team performance in Montreal
The silver medal is the second podium finish for Álvarez in Montreal, where he previously won bronze in the Under-23 time trial. In that event, he finished behind winner Ryan Gal of the Netherlands and silver medalist Nicolas Milesi of Italy.
The Spanish effort in the road race was supported by Eñaut Urkaregi, who acted as a domestique for Álvarez. Urkaregi attacked from the peloton with four laps remaining to harden the pace and set up his leader’s final assault, ultimately finishing 56th, 8 minutes and 33 seconds behind the winner.
Spain’s total medal count in Montreal reached four following Álvarez’s performance. Noval won the road race by 42 seconds over France’s Simon Defrance.
