Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua opened up in a candid interview about navigating the intense pressures of NFL stardom, detailing how he turned to alcohol to cope with the sudden lifestyle changes, public scrutiny, and the emotional weight of high-level performance. Speaking in an interview with Elle Duncan for Netflix Sports, the fifth-round draft pick shared the vulnerable reality behind his record-setting emergence in the league.
The Rapid Ascent to NFL Stardom and Hidden Pressures
Entering the league as the No. 177 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, Nacua quickly shattered rookie expectations. According to league records, he holds NFL marks for the most receiving yards in a rookie season with 1,486 yards and the most receptions by a rookie in a single game with 15. Following up on that historic debut, he led the NFL last season with 129 receptions, compiling a young career total of 313 catches, 4,191 yards, and 19 receiving touchdowns.
Yet, that meteoric rise brought a sudden shift in lifestyle. In his conversation with Duncan, Nacua explained how transforming into a public figure overnight created an immense internal burden. “Just I think some of the change in lifestyle that came up to me, becoming a public figure, the stress of performing at a high level, and then I recently I became a father,” Nacua said.
Fatherhood, Isolation, and Turning to Alcohol
Balancing professional demands with personal milestones proved challenging for the 25-year-old receiver. With a 10-month-old son and the complexities of navigating a co-parenting relationship, Nacua admitted he fell into patterns of isolation rather than seeking support.

“I would kind of isolate myself to feel like the weight of all the issues and things that I have was stuck on my shoulders, and not being willing to ask for help,” Nacua stated. “I was never one to share my fears, my worries. I was always finding different ways to escape, I guess, from that tension or that stress.”
Rather than addressing his feelings head-on, Nacua shared that he turned to alcohol to numb the pressure. “Just kind of drowning myself so that the issues and the stress that I was feeling never had the opportunity to be addressed,” he said.
Seeking Help and Looking Forward
Recognizing the need for a healthier path, Nacua ultimately entered a rehabilitation center. He credited the facility with helping him open up, communicate his emotions, and address the tension he had long avoided.

“Right when I entered the rehabilitation center, I was able to have open and honest conversations,” Nacua said. Looking ahead, the Rams star emphasized that his primary motivation is his son, expressing a clear goal: “I’m looking forward most to becoming a person that I think my son will be proud of.”
