JAKARTA – The Indonesian Badminton Federation (PBSI) aims to secure a title from the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2026 event after last year all the country’s representatives withdrew empty-handed.
Head of PBSI’s Training and Performance Division (Kabid Binpres) Eng Hian said the greatest opportunities for Indonesia are in the men’s doubles sector due to performance, quartet depth and stability.
“One of our priority goals is the Indonesia Masters because we are the hosts. We want to do everything to win the title. The goal of two silver medals is not enough, at least one title here,” Eng Hian said at a press conference in Jakarta.
In order to secure the title at home, the PBSI also implemented a special strategy regarding sending athletes to the two previous tournaments earlier this year, the Malaysia Open (Super 1000) and the India Open (Super 750) respectively.
The national badminton leader decided to send only nine representatives to Malaysia and then only four to India, all of whom ended up without a title. The best achievement was achieved by non-Pelatnas PBSI athlete Jonatan Christie, who became runner-up in New Delhi.
Eng Hian said not all the main players were sent to the opening tournament so that their physical and mental condition reached the peak (maximum performance) when they fought in front of the audience.
“Why not send everyone into the initial tournament? Because we want his maximum performance to be here (Indonesian Masters). We want to focus on the hosting tournament. There are positives and negatives. We focus on player performance management here,” he said.
The Indonesia Masters 2026 will take place from January 20 to 25 at Istora Senayan, Jakarta. Indonesia will send 25 representatives plus Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja who will play mixed doubles with Singapore representative Hee Kai Terry.
