Korean badminton ushered in a golden era this year.
‘Badminton Empress’ Ahn Se-young tied the record for the most wins in history with 11 wins this season, ranked first in winning percentage (94.8%), and easily exceeded the first ever single season prize money of 1 million dollars and 1.4 billion won in Korean money.
“I will have to continue to break those records, and I was very happy and thankful that I was able to finish the last competition of the year with such good results.”
Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho, ranked No. 1 in the men’s doubles world rankings, also combined for their 11th championship with Ahn Se-young, and Seo Seung-jae achieved 12 wins, the most by an individual in a single season.
The world’s best badminton team prepares to set new records on the last night of the year as it departs for the Malaysia Open, the first tournament of the new year.
Hwang Sun-woo, the star of Korean swimming who shed tears at last year’s Paris Olympics, won the 200m freestyle at the National Sports Festival with a time of 1 minute 43.92 seconds, breaking the Asian record set by China’s Sun Yang at the 2017 World Championships.
Hwang Sun-woo, who has let go of his regrets, has a new year’s goal of winning the Asian Games.
“By setting a new Asian record, I also gained a lot of confidence, and since I set a time of 1 minute and 43 seconds, I think I need to improve by one more year in 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 to maintain this record and reduce it further.”
In this season’s World Table Tennis Finals, the ‘king of kings’ of world table tennis, Shin Yu-bin and Lim Jong-hoon achieved the feat of overcoming the sturdy wall of the Great Wall of China, giving a blessing to Korean table tennis.
