Stan Wawrinka looks back on the last off-season of his career. The 40-year-old will hang up his racket after the coming season and say goodbye to his well-deserved tennis pension. Before that, the three-time Grand Slam winner wants to cause another sensation in his last year on tour.
“I want to continue playing good tennis, I still have goals. Hopefully I can make it back into the top 100 and end the season with a good ranking,” said Wawrinka, currently number 157 in the world, before the start of the United Cup in Perth. The Swiss said he wanted to play all year round in 2026 and take part in the biggest tournaments.
Wawrinka and Bencic want to ensure a premiere
The decision to end his career next year has become “pretty clear” to him over the past few months. “I am happy with the decision, I have made peace with it,” Wawrinka said. Nevertheless, he will of course miss the emotions and support of the fans.
At the United Cup, Wawrinka will face France and Italy alongside his compatriot Belinda Bencic. “This is a great opportunity for us,” said Wawrinka, who will play his first match of the season on January 4th against Flavio Cobolli. Switzerland has never made it past the group stage in the short history of the United Cup.
