Next year the Youth Olympic Games will return. It will be the first Olympic edition on African soil and will bring together young athletes from around the world in 26 disciplines.
Dakar 2026 will mark a historic event in sport, it will be the first Olympic event on African soil. In addition, the Youth Olympic Games were long overdue after being postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic. They were originally planned for 2022, it will be the fourth edition of this tournament after: Singapore 2010, Nanjing 2014 and Buenos Aires 2018.
The 14-day period was proposed to IOC Executive Committee after an evaluation that considered school and university calendars, weather conditions and coincidence with other international events. In this way, the date seeks to promote youth participation and educational support.
Dakar 2026 will also coincide with the African Youth Day (November 1)a symbolic day for Senegal that will allow greater participation of local communities and schoolchildren in the cultural and sports activities of the event.
The sports program will include a combination of traditional and urban disciplines: athletics, swimming, archery, badminton, baseball 5, basketball 3×3, boxing, breaking, road cycling, horse riding (jumping), fencing, five-a-side football, artistic gymnastics, beach handball, judo, rowing, rugby seven, sailing, skate (street), table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, beach volley, beach wrestling and wushu.
