Rybakina Ascends to World Number One After US Open Triumph
Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina captured the US Open singles title to secure the top spot in the WTA rankings, overtaking Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka, who had held the number one ranking for 99 weeks. The 27-year-old Rybakina secured her debut at the summit after advancing past the quarterfinals, eventually sweeping through the semifinals and final to build a commanding lead in the rankings. Rybakina becomes the 30th player to hold the WTA number one ranking and stands as the second-oldest debutant in that position, trailing only Germany’s Angelika Kerbere, who reached the top at age 28 in 2016.
Behind Rybakina and Sabalenka, the top tier of the WTA singles rankings features American Jessica Pegula at third and fellow American Coco Gauff at fourth, alongside Russia’s Mirra Andreeva and Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova. Further shifts in the top ten saw Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina climb from ninth to seventh place, bypassing Czech player Karolína Muchová and Poland’s Iga Świątek, with Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk rounding out the top ten.
Latvian Standings: Ostapenko Maintains 32nd Position
Aļona Ostapenko retained her position at 32nd in the WTA singles rankings, holding 1,452 points. The US Open fortnight saw Ostapenko fall in the opening round of the main draw after earning a spot through the lucky loser draw for the second Grand Slam tournament. In the WTA doubles rankings, however, Ostapenko climbed two spots to 11th. Alongside her Taiwanese partner Su-wei Hsieh, the Latvian-Taiwanese duo sits seventh in the WTA doubles season race, keeping them in strong contention for the season-ending WTA Finals.
Latvia’s second-ranked singles player, Darja Semeņistaja, dropped 11 spots in the latest singles update to land at 120th globally with 604 points, while also falling 15 places in doubles to 182nd. Additional movement among Latvian competitors shows Beatrise Zeltiņa climbing 12 spots in singles to 439th with 133 points and recovering five places in doubles to 321st. Retired player Anastasija Sevastova slipped 12 positions to 606th in singles with 70 points. Sabīne Rutlauka rose three places to 714th, while Elza Tomase dropped 95 spots to 765th in singles and 62 places to 707th in doubles. Adelīna Lačinova fell 30 spots to 807th, Diāna Marcinkēviča dropped 10 spots to 891st in singles and 97 spots to 978th in doubles, and Daniela Vismane advanced 15 places to 1,027th. Further down the rankings, Daniela Dārta Feldmane surged 51 spots in singles to 1,202nd and made a notable 78-place jump in doubles to 886th, while Anna Ozerova climbed 25 positions to 1,467th, alongside nine other Latvian players positioned outside the top one thousand.

Latvia’s second-ranked singles player, Darja Semeņistaja, is scheduled to open her campaign at the São Paulo WTA 250 tournament, facing Japan’s Haya Kinoshita, who holds the 210th ranking, on September 15.
