Wael Mohya is set to report to Germany’s training camp in Herzogenaurach on Monday, entering the national team fold as the youngest potential debutant in post-war history. National team coach Jürgen Klopp selected the 17-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder for upcoming fixtures, drawing on a rapidly accelerating club career.
The Rise From Relegation Battle to National Selection
Born in Mettmann near Düsseldorf on December 31, 2008, Mohya has developed within Borussia Mönchengladbach’s youth system since he was eight years old. In the summer of 2025, he won the German U17 championship with the club. He made his Bundesliga debut on December 13, 2025, during a 3-1 home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg on the 14th matchday. At 16 years and 347 days old, he surpassed Marko Marin as the youngest player to feature for Gladbach in the Bundesliga. On the 25th matchday of the previous season, he scored his first league goal against FC Bayern Munich.
Mohya has now made 23 league appearances for Borussia, scoring four goals. His recent performances include a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over VfB Stuttgart. Sport director Rouven Schröder highlighted the player’s temperament, noting that he maintains composure despite high pressure. Borussia coach Alexander Blessin praised his coolness on the pitch, while club president and 1974 World Cup winner Rainer Bonhof advised the youngster to continue gathering experience at Mönchengladbach.

Mohya Approaches Record Status for Germany Debut
Should Klopp deploy Mohya in the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Serbia on November 13 in Belgrade or against the Netherlands on November 16, the midfielder would be 17 years and 317 days old. That appearance would make him the fifth player under 18 to debut for Germany’s senior team, following Youssoufa Moukoko in November 2022 (17 years and 361 days), Uwe Seeler in 1954 (17 years and 345 days), Marius Hiller in 1910 (17 years and 241 days), and Willy Baumgärtner in 1908 (17 years and 104 days). He would rank as the youngest post-war debutant and the third-youngest overall in national team history.
Klopp confirmed he held three conversations with Mohya prior to the call-up. The national coach noted that he intends to continuously integrate younger prospects into the squad evaluation process moving forward. Mohya’s contract with Mönchengladbach runs through 2028.
