The History of the Philadelphia City Series | Phillies vs. Athletics ~ Philadelphia Baseball Review

The Philadelphia City Series was an annual competition between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Philadelphia Phillies. The contests were exhibitions, but bragging rights were at stake. Especially in the seasons when the two clubs fought, the City Series gave Philadelphia baseball fans something to look forward to.

1954

April 10, 1954: Athletics 7, Phillies 6 (Connie Mack Stadium)

Vic Power threw a two-run homerun in the top deck in the ninth inning to take the A’s to the win. The A’s had a three-point lead, but the Phillies responded with a five-point sixth. Lou Limmer finished 4-for-5 in the win with two runs scored. Both teams combined for 25 hits during the day.

April 11, 1954: Phillies 1, Athletics 0 (Connie Mack Stadium)

Paul Penson, Bob Miller and Steve Ridzik each pitched three sets to combine for the shutout. Ted Kazanski scored the only run of the afternoon, starting with a double in the sixth before crossing home plate on a Del Ennis single in the middle.

June 28, 1954: Phillies 3, Athletics 2 (Connie Mack Stadium)

Tommy Qualters secured the win and the series win for the Phils. The game was cut short to seven innings due to the rain. Ed Burthschy blew seven for track and field. Vic Power was hit in the head with a pitch and was carried off the field. He eventually regained consciousness in the clubhouse, but was taken to the Presbyterian hospital and admitted for observation. Richie Ashburn scored two points while Stan Lopata finished 3v4 that day.
