Jakobsen achieves third stage victory at Vuelta

DFabio Jakobsen, who fell badly a year ago, sprinted to his third stage win on the 76th Tour of Spain on his 25th birthday. The Dutchman continued his impressive comeback show in cycling and on Tuesday also won the 16th stage over 180 kilometers from Laredo to Santa Cruz de Bezana in a mass sprint ahead of the Belgian Jordi Meeus and the Italian Matteo Trentin. Jakobsen had already won the fourth and eighth Vuelta stage.

There was no change in the overall ranking. The Norwegian outsider Odd Christian Eiking, who has been wearing the red jersey for a week, is 54 seconds ahead of Frenchman Guillaume Martin and 1:36 minutes ahead of top favorite Primoz Roglic from Slovenia.

Jakobsen was pushed into the barrier by his compatriot Dylan Groenewegen on August 5, 2020 during the Tour of Poland at a speed of 80 km / h. The sprinter was now in an artificial coma and had lost almost all of its teeth in the fall. His face had to be sewn with 130 stitches. It wasn’t until April 2021 that he made his comeback on the Tour of Turkey.

Eiking’s triumph could end in red on Wednesday, when the difficult final climb to Lagos de Covadonga awaits on the 17th stage. In addition, two mountains of the first category await on the 185.8-kilometer stage. The third major national tour of the year ends on Sunday with an individual time trial in Santiago de Compostela.
