West Ham United moved to appoint Scott Parker as head coach this week after holding talks with John Heitinga about the vacant job, but sporting director and club icon Mark Noble reportedly intervened to block the Dutchman’s return, FCUpdate.nl reported. The Hammers dismissed Nuno Espírito Santo on Tuesday following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, and club officials spoke with the unemployed Heitinga both before and after that match, according to the report.
Heitinga, who served as an assistant to David Moyes at West Ham from September 2023 to June 2024, told the club he would welcome a return to London as head coach, FCUpdate.nl and VoetbalPrimeur reported. But no agreement was reached, and the Dutch report attributed the collapse to internal resistance: Noble allegedly went to owner Daniel Křetínský to argue against Heitinga and instead urged the club to back his former teammate Parker.
Noble’s push lands on former teammate Parker
Parker played for West Ham between 2007 and 2011, making 129 appearances for the club, FCUpdate.nl reported. As a manager he has already guided Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion to the Premier League, and he also had a spell at Club Brugge in the 2022/23 season, Voetbalzone and Voetbalkrant reported. Talks with Parker were at an advanced stage before West Ham formally appointed the 46-year-old on Nov. 4, succeeding Espírito Santo.
The two Dutch outlets describe the same sequence differently on timing: FCUpdate.nl and VoetbalPrimeur wrote that Parker had not yet been officially named, while Voetbalzone reported the appointment as completed. Both agree on the substance — Heitinga was approached, Heitinga was interested, and Noble’s opposition steered the club toward Parker.
Parker’s debut: 3-0 down, 3-3 at Cardiff
Parker’s first match in charge produced a comeback that Voetbalkrant called remarkable. West Ham traveled to Cardiff City on Wednesday night and trailed 3-0 at halftime after Jack Moylan scored a first-half hat trick. Parker, appointed only hours earlier, made three substitutions at the break, and the changes worked: Divine Mukasa pulled one back in the 58th minute, Belgian midfielder Arne Engels completed a composed left-footed attack seven minutes later to make it 3-2, and that was Engels’ first goal for West Ham, Voetbalkrant reported. West Ham kept pressing for a winner and Maximilian Kilman leveled it 3-3 in the 82nd minute.
Joël Veltman, the Dutch defender, described the halftime address and the dressing-room reaction in comments to Voetbal International: “The coach was angry at halftime, but he knew what situation we were in. He said we had nothing left to lose and that we owed it to the fans to play a better second half. I think we succeeded in that.” Veltman added that the players had also spoken among themselves at the break, and he singled out captain Jarrod Bowen, whom Parker had asked to lead the side in the second half: “Our captain stepped up when we needed him,” Veltman said, noting Bowen’s assists on the comeback goals.
Where West Ham stands in the Championship
The managerial change comes with West Ham searching for a quick route back to the Premier League after relegation last season. The club sat eighth in the Championship after 13 rounds with 22 points, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough, FCUpdate.nl reported. For Wednesday’s trip to Cardiff, the interim duties fell to Noble alongside Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville, FCUpdate.nl reported.

Heitinga’s path back to London stalled
For Heitinga, West Ham is familiar territory. Beyond his 2023-24 stint under Moyes, he has since worked as an assistant to Arne Slot at Liverpool, served as Ajax head coach until his dismissal last season, and spent about a month as an assistant to Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year, FCUpdate.nl reported. He has been without a club since leaving Tottenham in February, according to the report — a résumé that made him a credible candidate but not, ultimately, the one Noble wanted.
Parker now inherits a squad that includes Dutch players Veltman and Joël Piroe, Voetbalzone reported, and faces the task of closing the six-point gap to the Championship leaders with a promotion push still ahead.
