Vancouver Whitecaps’ Belal Halbouni, Teammate of Thomas Müller, Diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphom

Vancouver Whitecaps defender Belal Halbouni, a teammate of Thomas Müller, has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system. The Major League Soccer club confirmed the diagnosis on Friday.

The 26-year-old player, of Syrian descent, has withdrawn from the team to focus on his treatment and recovery. His treatment began last week in his hometown of London, in the Canadian province of Ontario. The news comes as a blow to the Whitecaps organization and the player’s teammates, after he helped the team reach the MLS Cup Final.

Club Extends Halbouni's Contract Through 2027

On the same day the diagnosis was made public, the team announced that it had extended Halbouni’s contract through the end of the 2027/28 MLS season.

“We stand behind you, Belal. On every step of your journey,” the Whitecaps wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

Hodgkin Lymphoma Treatable with High Cure Rate

Hodgkin lymphoma is a form of blood cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. The disease is considered one of the more treatable forms of cancer when detected early. With timely diagnosis and appropriate therapy, the cure rate for Hodgkin lymphoma is high, with between 80 and 90 percent of patients achieving a permanent remission.

“For the 26-year-old, football moves completely into the background for the indefinite future,” confirming that Halbouni will step away from all competitive play to concentrate fully on his treatment and recovery. The exact timeline for his potential return to professional football remains unknown.

Schuster and Halbouni on the Diagnosis

Whitecaps Sporting Director Axel Schuster, a German national, spoke directly about the club’s commitment to the player. “Belal and his family have the full support of everyone in the organization,” Schuster was quoted as saying by Sport Illustrated. “Belal will take a break from football to concentrate on his treatment and recovery. We will be there for him on every step of the way, and we look forward to welcoming him back with us when the time is right.”

In response, the player himself issued a statement through the club, expressing gratitude for the support. “The way this club has supported me goes far beyond football and has once again shown me what it really means to be part of a family,” Halbouni said. “I am proud to wear this crest, grateful to call Vancouver my home, and grateful for the hope this club has given me.”

Halbouni’s Career Path: From Germany to Vancouver

Prior to joining the Whitecaps, the defender spent time in the German lower leagues.

In January 2020, Halbouni moved from the Canadian FC London to the second team of Werder Bremen. He played 28 matches in the German Regionalliga for Bremen, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

In the summer of 2022, he took a step up by joining 1. FC Magdeburg, aiming to break into the professional ranks. A serious knee injury, a torn cruciate ligament, significantly hampered his progress at Magdeburg, limiting him to appearances primarily with the reserve team. He did not make the breakthrough he hoped for with the club’s first team.

His fortunes changed in February 2024 when he returned to Canada and signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Since joining, he has been an important contributor to the team, helping them win the Canadian Championship in 2024 and 2025. He played 29 competitive matches for the club, often forming a key part of the defense.

A Promising Season Cut Short by Injury

Halbouni missed the entire MLS season 2026 due to a knee injury. However, he was a crucial player for the team’s deep run into the 2025 MLS Cup playoffs. Between August 17 and November 22, he played in 11 of the team’s 14 matches, playing the full 90 minutes in each one.

His season came to an end on November 22 in a playoff quarterfinal, where he suffered a bone bruise in his left knee. Despite his absence, the Vancouver Whitecaps continued their run, reaching the MLS Cup Final just weeks after his injury. His performances in the backline were a contributing factor to the team’s success that season.

What Comes Next for Belal Halbouni

The next steps involve a dedicated course of treatment in London, Ontario, with the unwavering support of his family, the Whitecaps organization, and his teammates. The club has assured him of its support throughout this process, with no timeline placed on his potential return to the field.

The medical outlook is positive, with Hodgkin lymphoma being a highly treatable form of cancer.
