The breakthrough season for Austrian tennis doubles partners Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner

The breakthrough season for Austrian tennis doubles partners Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner concluded in the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy. The duo fell 4-6, 4-6 to the American-British pairing of Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski on Saturday.

Semifinal Defeat in Paris

Miedler and Oberleitner struggled to establish momentum against Harrison and Skupski from the outset. In both sets, the Austrians conceded a break of serve in the third game, allowing their opponents to maintain a lead throughout the match. Despite creating three break-point opportunities during the opening set, Miedler and Oberleitner were unable to convert, and the first set concluded 6-4. The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Austrian team unable to recover after the early deficit. The match ended in just over an hour as Harrison and Skupski secured victory on their first match point.

Rapid Rise of the Austrian Pairing

The semifinal finish in Paris marks the conclusion of a brief but highly productive partnership for Miedler and Oberleitner. The two began competing together on the ATP Tour only at the end of September in Tokyo. Since that debut, they achieved a quarterfinal finish in Tokyo, won the title at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Shanghai, reached the final in Almaty, and secured a victory at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

The Kurier reported that the team’s success has been statistically significant, with the duo accumulating 15 wins in 17 matches on the ATP Tour during their short collaboration. Including their Davis Cup debut against Belgium, their total record stands at 16 wins in 18 matches. This form has seen both players climb the world rankings, with Oberleitner reaching a live ranking of number 13 and Miedler holding the number 19 spot in doubles, as noted by the Kurier.

Positive Outlook for Davis Cup

Despite the exit in Paris, the players maintained a positive perspective on their recent performance. “We are very satisfied with the season and how the last few weeks have gone,” Oberleitner stated following the match. He noted that while luck was not on their side during the semifinal, they were pleased with their overall trajectory and are now focusing on their next commitment.

The pair is scheduled to represent Austria in the Davis Cup “Final 8” tournament, which takes place in Bologna at the end of November.

Tournament Path to the Semifinals

Miedler and Oberleitner’s run at the Paris Masters included several high-stakes matches. Their tournament began with a victory over French alternates Arthur Reymond and Luca Sanchez (5-7, 6-2, 10-3 in the match tiebreak). They initially expected to face Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo, but after several withdrawals, they faced the alternates. They followed this with a win against the eighth-seeded Brazilian team of Rafael Matos and Orlando Luz (6-3, 7-6) and a quarterfinal comeback victory against Petr Nouza and Michael Venus (6-7, 6-4, 10-5).
