Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner have advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 event at Paris La Défense, continuing a rapid rise for the new Austrian doubles pairing. The duo, who recently claimed victory in Vienna, defeated the eighth-seeded Brazilian team of Rafael Matos and Orlando Luz 6-3, 7-6(5), Kurier reported.
Overcoming a Tie-Break Deficit in Paris
The match against Matos and Luz presented a significant test during the second set. After securing the first set, Miedler and Oberleitner found themselves trailing in the tie-break with a double mini-break disadvantage. According to Miedler, the pair remained composed despite the pressure, eventually rallying to close out the match. “We were a bit shocked when we were down a double mini-break in the tie-break, but we stayed on track and managed to decide it for ourselves,” Miedler said.
Building on a Rapidly Established Partnership
The success in Paris marks the latest milestone for a partnership that only began competing on the ATP Tour in late September. Following their debut with the Kurier Austria Davis Cup team on September 19, where they secured a win against Belgium, the pair has compiled a record of 15 victories in 17 matches on the ATP Tour, according to Kurier. Including their Davis Cup performance, their combined record stands at 16 wins in 18 matches.
This surge in form has significantly impacted their standing in the professional rankings. In the live rankings, Oberleitner has climbed to number 13, while Miedler holds the 19th position. Despite this momentum, the pair will not qualify for the ATP Finals this year, as they have only been playing tournament tennis together since late September. Looking toward the future, Oberleitner noted the importance of maintaining their current level of play, telling Kurier, “We know that it won’t always go on like this, but the chances are good if we play somewhat like this in 2027.”
Quarterfinal Matchup Against Familiar Opponents
The path to the semifinals requires a repeat performance against Petr Nouza and Michael Venus. The Czech-New Zealander duo previously faced Miedler and Oberleitner during the opening round in Vienna, where the Austrians won 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. The upcoming match holds additional context, as Oberleitner had previously partnered with Nouza before joining forces with Miedler. Kurier confirmed the progression of the Austrian duo to the quarterfinals.
