American tennis player Tommy Paul secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters on Thursday, a victory that keeps his hopes alive for qualifying for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. Paul defeated France’s Quentin Halys 7-6 (3), 6-4, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo.
Paul’s Path to Turin Qualification
The win in Paris is critical for Paul’s standing in the Race to Turin, which determines the eight-man field for the ATP Finals. Currently, the final qualifying position is held by Spanish player Rafa Jódar. Diario AS reported that Paul enters the quarterfinals with 2,925 points, trailing Jódar’s 3,234 points. Should Paul advance to the semifinals, his point total would rise to 3,125, still placing him behind the Spaniard. Reaching the final would push his total to 3,325, sufficient to surpass Jódar in the standings.

Quarterfinal Matchup in Paris
Paul now awaits his next opponent in the tournament. He is scheduled to face the winner of the match between fellow American Ben Shelton, the third seed, and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. Marca reported that Paul’s performance against Halys lasted one hour and 35 minutes. Diario AS added that Paul demonstrated significant efficiency on his serve throughout the match, dropping only two points on his first serve for a 96% effectiveness rate.
Threats to the Final ATP Finals Spot
While Paul remains in contention, he is not the only player challenging Jódar for the final spot in the ATP Finals. Taylor Fritz, another American, is also competing in Paris and remains a threat. According to Diario AS, Fritz entered the tournament with 2,950 points. If Fritz defeats Arthur Fils in his current round and potentially advances past a theoretical quarterfinal against Carlos Alcaraz, he would reach 3,250 points, which would be enough to move ahead of Jódar’s 3,234 points. Marca noted that Fritz requires at least a semifinal appearance to realistically threaten Jódar’s position.

Tournament Context for Remaining Contenders
Rafa Jódar’s participation in the Paris Masters ended earlier this week following a loss to Casper Ruud, leaving his fate in the hands of the remaining field. Marca reported that along with Paul and Fritz, other players have been vying for the two vacant spots in the eight-man field for Turin, which is scheduled for November 15–22. Paul, currently ranked 13th in the race, continues his campaign on the upper half of the draw, where he could face Lorenzo Musetti in a hypothetical semifinal match.
Paul’s next match in the quarterfinals is scheduled for Friday.
