Saints Designate Rookie Jordyn Tyson to Return From Injured Reserve

New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since sustaining a Grade 2 right hamstring injury during an August 13 joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team has officially designated the first-round draft pick to return from injured reserve, opening a 21-day window for his activation to the 52-man roster.

Limited Practice Participation

Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed that Tyson participated in a limited capacity as the Saints prepare for their Week 9 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. The organization is maintaining a measured approach to the rookie’s reintegration after his extended absence, which spanned the first seven games of the season. Moore clarified that the team is not rushing the process, noting that Tyson has not experienced any setbacks or re-aggravations of the injury during his recovery.

This is his first opportunity to be out on the field with our team, so it was good to see him, get him out there in a limited capacity and we’ll just see how this whole week goes.

Kind of got a slow start to the NFL so I've got to take my time and really adjust to it, I feel like. So I feel it's been a blessing, Tyson said. He explained that he feels faster and more explosive now, benefiting from the team’s load management tools that allow trainers to track his output. Addressing his role, the 6-2, 215-pound receiver noted his intent to contribute as a playmaker who can make difficult catches and provide effective blocking.

Shough Welcomes Rookie to Passing Rotation

Shough, who has already seen Chris Olave (49 catches, 636 yards, 2 TDs) and Devaughn Vele (33 catches, 348 yards, 3 TDs) pace for career seasons, expressed excitement about adding the rookie to the rotation. “He’s a dog,” Shough said.

Strategic data highlights why Tyson’s return is viewed as a significant boost for the Saints (2-5). Shough ranks ninth in DVOA and has been highly effective against man coverage, completing 65 percent of his passes for 511 yards against such schemes. Because the Browns utilize man coverage at a 46 percent rate, Tyson’s skill set—specifically his “NFL-ready” release and ability to sink his hips at the top of routes—could be a vital asset. While the 21-day window allows the team to wait until as late as Week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals to activate him, the Saints are currently evaluating his readiness for the upcoming noon Sunday game at the Caesars Superdome.

Kelvin Banks Jr. Returns to Practice

Tyson was not the only player to rejoin the team on Wednesday. Left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. also returned to the field in a limited capacity, less than two months after undergoing surgery for a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 2. Banks’ progress is ahead of schedule, providing another potential reinforcement for an offense looking to climb the NFC South standings. The Saints also recently claimed running back Audric Estime off waivers from the Cleveland Browns to provide depth while they await the return of Travis Etienne, who remains on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

The coaching staff remains cautious regarding the immediate playing status of both Tyson and Banks. Moore emphasized that the team will continue to monitor their performance throughout the week before finalizing decisions for Sunday. The Saints enter the week looking to snap a home losing streak at the Caesars Superdome, where they are 0-3 this season, as they attempt to stay in the hunt within a division currently led by the 3-4 Carolina Panthers.
