Mike Schloesser and Andrea Maya Becerra Arizaga Claim Compound Gold at Chengdu World Games
The favorites secured gold medals in the men’s and women’s individual compound archery tournaments at the World Games 2025 in Chengdu, with the Netherlands’ Mike Schloesser and Mexico’s Andrea Maya Becerra Arizaga capturing the respective titles, OA Sport reported.
Schloesser negotiated a challenging path through the men's bracket on the Chinese shooting lines. After securing the number one ranking position in the two-day ranking round, the Dutch archer opened his elimination matches by edging Israel’s Shamai Yamrom in a tense shoot-off following a 147-147 tie in regulation, where both archers landed a 10-plus on their shoot-off arrows. Schloesser then defeated India’s Abhishek Verma 148-145 in the semifinals before securing the gold medal with a 150-148 victory over the United States competitor Curtis Lee Broadnax.
Broadnax and Jaatma Secure Silver as Podium Places Fill
Broadnax claimed the silver medal for the United States following his hard-fought final against Schloesser. The men’s podium was completed by India’s Rishabh Yadav, who defeated compatriot Verma 149-147 in the bronze-medal match.
In the women’s tournament, Becerra Arizaga matched Schloesser’s dominant run from the top qualifying spot. The Mexican competitor advanced through the quarterfinals before securing a pair of narrow victories with identical 148-147 scores—first against Great Britain’s Ella Gibson, then against Colombia’s Alejandra Usquiano in the semifinals. In the gold-medal match, Becerra Arizaga edged Estonia’s Lisell Jaatma 147-146 to take the title.
Jaatma settled for the silver medal, while Estonia celebrated a double podium finish as teammate Meeri-Marita Paas captured the bronze medal by defeating Usquiano 148-143.
