Low Zi Yu collected RM13,000 in cash incentives from the Johor Badminton Association and private backers in Petaling Jaya after capturing the girls’ doubles title at the World Junior Championships.

Johor Badminton Association Awards Cash Prizes to Teenage Shuttler

The Johor Badminton Association presented the 16-year-old Segamat-born shuttler with RM10,000, while private firm Eu Jin Sdn Bhd added another RM3,000 to the total. Eu Jin Sdn Bhd also gifted Zi Yu and her partner Genevie Lim a G-Shock watch each, valued at RM1,500 apiece. JHBA president Datuk Chong Juong Chain praised the teenager’s international success, describing her as a player who brought pride to her home state.

“At just 16 years old, Low Zi Yu is like a flower in full bloom in the world of badminton, having made history through her remarkable achievements on the international stage,” Juong Chain said.

The JHBA leadership expressed hope that the financial backing would serve as motivation for the national team member to continue developing her performance. Juong Chain also thanked the corporate sponsors for investing in the state’s young talent.

Historic Cairo Victory Follows Previous Final Reverses

Zi Yu and Genevie secured their place in badminton history last month in Cairo by defeating Japan’s Nijika Kamata and Shizuku Kashio in the girls’ doubles final. Their title run followed a strong campaign in the mixed team event, where Malaysia claimed the silver medal after falling to China.

The Cairo triumph marked a breakthrough for Zi Yu after two previous runner-up finishes at the world junior level with different partners. In 2024, at age 14, she reached the Nanchang final alongside Dania Sofea Zaidi, losing to Japan’s Ririna Hiramoto and Aya Tamaki. She reached the championship match again last year with Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, falling to China’s Tan Kexuan and Wei Yueyue.
