Lions LB Jack Campbell Carted Off Field With Neck Injury

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell will spend the night in a hospital after being carted off the field on a stretcher with a neck injury during Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, the team said — the latest hit to a Lions defense that also lost two other starters to injuries in the same game.

RDS reported that Campbell was placed on a stretcher and taken off the field on a medical cart after a tackle in the game at Detroit, and that the Lions later announced he would remain at the hospital overnight while exams on the neck injury continue.

The Tackle on T.J. Hockenson

The injury occurred on a play in which Campbell tackled Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson. After the tackle, Campbell stayed on the turf face-down while the team’s medical staff examined him on the field. He was then secured to the stretcher and transported off the field to applause from the crowd, with teammates gathering around the cart as it left the playing surface, RDS reported.

An All-Pro Defender on a New Contract

Campbell was a first-round draft pick of the Lions and was named to the NFL’s All-Pro team last season, according to RDS. In May, he agreed to a four-year contract extension with Detroit, the team said.

The neck injury is one of three defensive injuries the Lions suffered in the game. Defensive lineman DJ Wonnum and defensive back Brian Branch both entered the league’s concussion protocol, RDS reported.

Overnight Exams, No Timetable Yet

The Lions said Campbell is at the hospital to undergo evaluation for a neck injury and will stay at the facility overnight to continue the exams. The team has not provided a timeline for his return or the results of the tests.

Questions Fans Are Asking About the Campbell Injury

How serious is Jack Campbell’s neck injury? The Lions have described it only as a neck injury under evaluation. No severity, diagnosis or expected recovery time has been disclosed.

When will the Lions provide an update? The club has not announced when results will be released.

Campbell is one of three Lions defensive players hurt in the Vikings game, alongside Wonnum and Branch, meaning Detroit must absorb the absences of a linebacker coming off an All-Pro season and two other starters.
