Students at IGS Fürstenau participated in a series of specialized training sessions led by the local Hadashi Judo Club on October 28 and November 4. The “Day of Judo” program brought instructors into the school’s gymnasium to introduce students across multiple grade levels to the fundamentals of the martial art, focusing on technical skills and personal development.
Lower grade introductions to falling and safety
For students in the fifth and sixth grades, the instruction centered on the basics of movement and safety. The sessions introduced participants to the mechanics of falling, a foundational element of judo training. Instructors emphasized that learning how to fall safely is a key part of the sport. Beyond these techniques, students practiced initial throwing maneuvers and holds. According to reports from the school, the sessions highlighted the importance of partner awareness, teaching students that the person executing a throw is responsible for ensuring their partner lands safely.
Self-defense training for older students
The program for students in grades 8 through 10 shifted its focus toward self-defense strategies. These sessions, held on October 28, prioritized situational awareness and personal conduct. Instructors led exercises on identifying uncomfortable situations and maintaining a confident demeanor. Alexander Munk, the school’s head of sports and all-day programs, noted that while some students were initially hesitant, the group transitioned into a focused and earnest training environment.
Building confidence through physical discipline
The collaboration between IGS Fürstenau and Hadashi Fürstenau aimed to provide students with more than just athletic techniques. Participants were encouraged to develop self-confidence through physical control and to practice mutual respect with their training partners. The school extended its thanks to the volunteer instructors—Melanie Wübbel, Siegfried Gertel, and Hanna Milius—for their patience and dedication during the sessions. The school administration confirmed that they intend to continue the partnership for future training events.
