The Orix Buffaloes have officially signed development draft pick Ryota Kurokawa to a contract, securing the 18-year-old Hanasaki Tokuharu High School pitcher as he begins his professional career. The agreement, finalized on November 4 at the Satoe Memorial Art Museum in Kazo, Saitama, includes a signing bonus of 3 million yen and an annual salary of 3 million yen, according to reported terms.
Kurokawa, a right-handed pitcher capable of reaching 148 kilometers per hour (approximately 92 mph), enters the organization with high expectations. Standing 182 centimeters tall and weighing 90 kilograms, he is noted for his physical stature inherited from his mother, a former judo champion, and a competitive intensity. His mother, Kotomi, is a former judoka who claimed victory at the 1985 Judo Asian Championships in the 72-kilogram division.
Scout Praises Kurokawa Pitching Attributes
Orix scout Daisuke Okazaki, who oversaw the recruitment of the young right-hander, emphasized that Kurokawa possesses the fundamental attributes necessary for a professional pitcher. “There is a strength of body inherited from his mother,” Okazaki said. “He has the stamina to throw, and the strength of mind. I believe he possesses all the skills required of a pitcher.”
For his part, Kurokawa acknowledged the transition ahead, stating that his primary focus during his first professional season will be on physical conditioning. “I was really glad to reach this day,” Kurokawa said following the signing. “But I have to work even harder from here on out.”
Professional aspirations and team connections
To reach that level, he identified consistency and mental toughness as key areas for improvement. “I want to be able to maintain my velocity even after pitching long innings,” he explained. “And I want to continue to elevate my mental strength.”
The transition to the Orix organization is supported by the presence of familiar faces. Kurokawa noted that having Hanasaki Tokuharu alumni already on the roster provides a sense of security. “Since there are seniors from my high school like Wakatsuki-san and Uehara-san, I feel very encouraged,” he stated. “First, I will focus on building a body that can avoid injury, and I will work hard to become a pitcher who can contend for the Sawamura Award in the future.”
Path to the active roster
As a player signed to a development contract, Kurokawa’s immediate objective is to earn a full-time, registered roster spot (known as a shihaika contract).
