Goseong County Wins 13 Events and Harmony Award at 37th Gyeongsangnam-do Sports Festival

Goseong County, in South Korea’s Gyeongsangnam-do province, won medals in 13 events and took home the Harmony Award at the 37th Gyeongsangnam-do Mass Sports Festival, held Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 in Jinju, Press News reported.

The county sent 620 people to the three-day competition — 498 athletes and 122 officials — who competed across 21 events, according to the county.

Track and Field and Hapkido Lead the Medal Table

Goseong finished first in the county division in both track and field and hapkido. Track and field marked a third year at the top for the county, while hapkido extended its winning streak to two years, the county said.

The county added five second-place finishes in ground golf, volleyball, gymnastics, soccer and taekwondo, and six third-place results in kendo, senior ground golf, basketball, badminton, senior gymnastics and senior tennis.

A Longevity Award for an 83-Year-Old Park Golfer

Beyond the event medals, the county’s delegation received the Harmony Award. Park Hyung-gap, born in 1942 and competing in park golf, was honored with the longevity award, the county said.

Goseong County Mayor Ha Hak-yeol credited the results to the athletes’ preparation, saying the festival was where the efforts of local sportspeople who trained and sweated to compete paid off, and thanked everyone for finishing without injuries. He added that the county will prepare so the 40th edition of the festival in 2030 can serve as a stage for provincial unity and broader participation in mass sports.
