Ciara Mageean, the Irish middle-distance runner who won the European 1500m title in Rome in 2024, has died at the age of 34 after being diagnosed with cancer, her family announced Sunday. Ciara Mageean died from stage-four bowel cancer, diagnosed in July 2025. She died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, surrounded by loved ones, according to a statement her family posted on Instagram.
The news lands barely a year after Mageean stood on top of the European podium, and just six days after she celebrated her wedding. Actu.fr reported that she married her longtime partner, Thomas Moran, in a small civil ceremony in Belfast in October, then held a large wedding celebration at Darver Castle in Ireland on Oct. 26 — six days before her death, according to Irish News.

A career built on the 1500m
Mageean, from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, was a two-time Olympian, racing the 1500m at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021. Her European record on the distance was remarkable: bronze in 2016, silver in 2022, and gold in Rome in 2024, where she beat Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell and France’s Agathe Guillemot. She also won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships, Sudinfo reported.
She came within a day of a third Olympic appearance: Actu.fr and Midi Libre reported that she was forced to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Games on the eve of her race after suffering an Achilles tendon injury.
The diagnosis, the book, the final weeks
Mageean publicly announced in July 2025 that she had cancer, later revealing it was advanced bowel cancer, Actu.fr reported. She wrote a book about her fight against the disease, “Ma plus grande course” (“My Greatest Race”), published in the summer of 2026.
Her family’s Instagram statement, carried by Midi Libre, said: “This morning, at 6:30, Ciara lost her battle with cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. Daughter, sister, wife and beloved friend, she was a source of inspiration for many; her absence will leave a great void.”

Tributes from the athletics world
Athletics Ireland said it was “deeply saddened” to learn of Mageean’s death, calling her a well-loved figure and a source of inspiration whose courage, warmth and strength of character would leave a lasting legacy, Sudinfo reported. The Olympic Council of Ireland saluted her as a national heroine, telling Actu.fr that “the country loses a heroine.”
World Athletics said it was devastated by the loss of Mageean, “a fighter on and off the track who gave us so many moments of celebration and inspired so many people.” Fellow Irish international and 2024 Olympic 1500m silver medalist Jessica Hull paid tribute to her rival and friend, writing that Mageean was “simply the most beautiful person in every way” and that she felt lucky to have raced and celebrated with her at finish lines.
What remains open
Mageean’s death at 34, a year after her European title and weeks after her diagnosis became public, closes a career cut short before Paris 2024. What is not yet known is how Irish athletics will formally honor her — Athletics Ireland has issued a statement of mourning but no memorial plans were announced in the reports reviewed.
