Flavio Cobolli withdrew from the Paris Masters on Monday ahead of his opening match due to a muscle injury, dealing a significant blow to his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Paris Masters Withdrawal Casts Doubt on Turin Qualification
The 24-year-old Italian, ranked sixth in the Race to Turin standings, made the trip to Paris and even took part in a short ceremony on center court before the evening session at the venue in the La Défense district. However, medical evaluation confirmed he could not take to the court, forcing a late scratch from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Cobolli was scheduled to face the winner of the match between France’s Arthur Gea, ranked 44th, and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, ranked 39th, in the second round. Tournament organizers announced that Argentine player Thiago Agustin Tirante, who lost in the qualifying rounds, will take Cobolli’s place in the main draw as a lucky loser.
This setback arrives just four days after Cobolli retired in tears during his second-round match at the Vienna ATP 500 event. At the time, he explained that he was suffering from a minor muscle elongation, noting that his emotional reaction on the court stemmed from the disappointment of having to stop rather than severe physical agony.
Despite missing the Paris event, Cobolli remains the primary pursuer of the four players already guaranteed spots in the season-ending championships: Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, and Daniil Medvedev. Four qualification berths remain available for the November 15-22 tournament in Turin.
The Race Standings and Chasing Pack in Paris
With Jannik Sinner holding the second spot in the race but facing a prolonged absence, the qualification threshold shifts downward, bringing the ninth-ranked player directly into contention. Rafael Jodar of Spain currently holds the ninth position in the race standings.
Behind Cobolli, France’s Arthur Fils and America’s Frances Tiafoe are actively competing for points to secure their standing. Meanwhile, several notable contenders sit further back in the race and require deep tournament runs in Paris to force their way into the Turin field.
Australia’s Alex de Minaur trails Jodar by 64 points in the standings. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion at the Paris tournament, and American Taylor Fritz also occupy precarious positions outside the immediate cutoff, needing exceptional results this week to secure their qualification.
