Thirty-eight-year-old Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang is part of the 10-player Vietnamese table tennis squad

Thirty-eight-year-old Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang is part of the 10-player Vietnamese table tennis squad selected by the Department of Physical Education and Sports to compete at the 2026 Southeast Asian Championships in Malaysia, Laodong.vn reported.

National Training Camp Opens in Preparation for November Tournament

The entire Vietnamese team has assembled at the National High-Level Athlete Training Center for their first training program of the year. The squad features ten athletes: Dinh Anh Hoang, Tran Mai Ngoc, Doan Ba Tuan Anh, Nguyen Anh Tu, Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang, Le Dinh Duc, Bui The Nghia, Lam Thu Cuc, Nguyen Thi Nga, and Hoang Tra My.

Athletes will contest seven events on the program when the regional tournament runs from Nov. 9 to 15 in Malaysia. Competition categories include men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and both team events.

Experience and Roster Adjustments in Women’s Singles

Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang is the most veteran and experienced competitor on the roster at age 38, following her appearance for the national team at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. Leadership duties in the women’s division shift following the omission of Nguyễn Khoa Diệu Khánh, who captured the women’s singles gold medal at the tournament held in Thailand.

With Diệu Khánh absent from the current selection, the federation turns to an experienced core of Nguyen Thi Nga, Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang, and Tran Mai Ngoc to secure the women’s singles title. Domestically, Dinh Anh Hoang and Tran Mai Ngoc arrived at the national camp having won the men’s singles and women’s singles championships at the X-2026 National Games.

Vietnam Table Tennis Federation Offers Cash Rewards for Medals

The Vietnam Table Tennis Federation established a gold-medal target for the upcoming Southeast Asian Championships. To back that ambition, officials announced a financial reward structure for medalists, offering 50 million dongs for a gold medal, 30 million dongs for a silver medal, and 20 million dongs for a bronze medal.

At the 2024 regional championships in Thailand, the Vietnamese delegation collected one gold medal through Nguyễn Khoa Diệu Khánh in women’s singles, three silver medals, and two bronze medals. The silver medals came via Nguyen Anh Tu in men’s singles, the women’s doubles pairing of Nguyễn Thị Nga and Mai Hoàng Mỹ Trang, and the men’s doubles duo of Nguyễn Đức Tuân and Đoàn Ba Tuan Anh. Nguyễn Đức Tuân and Dinh Anh Hoang added the bronze medals in men’s singles.
