FC Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer and Michael Olise returned to team training on Monday, providing a timely boost ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Atlético Madrid.
The German record champions head into the European clash at the Estadio Metropolitano following a 2–2 Bundesliga draw against Borussia Dortmund. While Neuer and Olise participated in Monday’s session, head coach Vincent Kompany remains without at least four players for the 21:00 kickoff.
Injury updates on Neuer and Olise
Neuer missed Bayern’s recent fixtures due to a foot injury, but the goalkeeper took his place in training on Monday.
Should Neuer be forced to sit out, 23-year-old Jonas Urbig is positioned to stand in. Urbig took a blow to the head during the Dortmund fixture but played through. Bayern’s medical department found no structural damage, and the goalkeeper trained alongside the squad on Monday.
Sidelined stars and squad depth in Madrid
Bayern’s injury list features several absences. Luis Díaz continues to recover from a muscle tear in his left thigh, completing his first individual ball work on Monday. Jamal Musiala also trained individually, though neither player will feature in Madrid.

Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari suffered setbacks against Dortmund. Gnabry picked up a left thigh muscle injury, while Saibari underwent surgery on Sunday after tearing the syndesmosis ligament in his right ankle, ruling him out until the new year.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks faces challenges in constructing an attacking structure around Harry Kane. 18-year-old Lennart Karl could be called upon after remaining on the bench against Dortmund.
Standings pressure and broadcast details
Both clubs enter the fourth matchday of the Champions League ligaphase seeking points to improve their position for the direct qualification for the round of 16. Bayern sits 14th in the standings with five points from three matches, while Atlético Madrid holds four points under coach Diego Simeone.

The fixture will be broadcast live and exclusively in Germany via Amazon Prime Video, with no free-to-air linear television coverage scheduled.
The ongoing debate over squad trust and the road ahead
Sportvorstand Max Eberl addressed the demanding nature of the fixture, noting that the team must pull together to achieve results. Regarding the limited playing time for 18-year-old Lennart Karl, a recent discussion arose surrounding the youngster and his advisor Michael Ballack, though assistant coach Aaron Danks firmly defended the club’s position by stating: Wir vertrauen Lennart definitiv auch in solchen Spielen. Er ist ein herausragender Spieler.
Eberl also emphasized that even with a fully fit squad, the trip to the Spanish capital represents a massive challenge. Meanwhile, Joshua Kimmich insisted that the team will leave everything on the pitch in Madrid as they look to climb into the top eight of the league phase standings, where the German champions ultimately aim to crown themselves Champions League winners in June 2027.
